Momentum is Building For Our Second Annual Gallup/Lemonade Day Briefing on “Business Startup Challenges and Youth Entrepreneurship Opportunities”; The Agenda Will be Engaging
By Steven Gordon, Lemonade Day National President
A few weeks ago, I asked you to save the date for our second annual youth entrepreneur summit on Thursday, Jan. 17, at Gallup World Headquarters in Washington, D.C. You already know that I’m honored to co-chair this briefing with Lemonade Day national board chairman, Charlie Hamilton, a successful serial entrepreneur himself, and Joe Daly, a Gallup partner and a member of the Lemonade Day national board of directors.
Today, I want to share exciting news about the agenda for the event. It is shaping up to be a truly engaging event. The day will start with registration and breakfast immediately followed by our morning session. Joe Daly will share results from a recently conducted Gallup poll on Youth and Entrepreneurial Aspiration. There is a shortage of mentors teaching kids the fundamentals of running businesses, serving customers, and pricing products. Joe will share how all hope is not lost and that opportunities exist to improve the cultural and entrepreneurial deficits that can change the mindset of today’s kids.
I’ll briefly share how in just the past 10 months since the February 2018 summit, Lemonade Day has advanced our vision of introducing children to the experience of entrepreneurism through running a lemonade stand. We’re thinking big and acting big with the help of Lemonade Day City Directors, elected officials and business leaders in the 72 licensed markets in the United States, Canada and South Africa where Lemonade Day events were held in 2018. Plans are full steam ahead to recruit 250,000 mentors to engage millions of lemonade business owners in the experience of hosting a lemonade stand and learning lessons that will serve them for life by the year 2023.
Speaking of which, Charlie will discuss the expansion of Lemonade Day to Puerto Rico and has invited Luis Fortuno, former governor of Puerto Rico, to talk about the importance of the Lemonade Day movement in his beloved country. Employment in Puerto Rico is reaching a tipping point toward economic growth and we believe the Lemonade Day program can be instrumental in urging an entrepreneurial mind set among business leaders and within schools and organizations focused on developing leadership and creative skills in their youth.
It All Started With a Lemonade Stand
I’m also thrilled that Lemonade Day’s 2017 Youth Entrepreneurs of the Year, Hailey Hertzman and Katie Vonder Haar, will join us again. You won’t even believe the trajectory their lives have taken since hosting their first lemonade stand - a journey that includes starting a business online and through pop-up shops, meeting legislators, lots of media interviews and even being named Kentucky Treasurers for a Day by Treasurer Allison Ball. Hailey and Katie’s moms will also talk about their observations on their daughters’ experiences and advice they have for other parents who would like to encourage entrepreneurship in their children.
Breakout Sessions, Esteemed Speakers, & Big Ideas
The Breakout Sessions will cover topics for educators, businesses, elected officials, and youth organizations. I’ve had the pleasure of working with our moderators and have no doubt they will facilitate conversations I’m sure will spark some very engaging discussions and solid ideas. Near the end of the agenda, all participants will hear the highlights generated from each of these sessions.
Finally, I cannot speak more highly of our featured speakers: Jim Clifton, chairman of Gallup; Dr. Ronald Beghetto, PhD, Tedx talk speaker, professor of educational psychology and director of the University of Connecticut’s Innovation House; and Amanda Roman, chief strategy officer of Conscious Capitalism, Inc. I feel privileged that these three esteemed professionals and thought leaders are willing to help Lemonade Day with shaping and defining what our nation’s future creative leaders will look.
This will be a day of sharing big ideas focused on improving the lives of kids, transforming their thinking, and encouraging them to explore potential opportunities, as well as, how adult leaders can influence student achievements that develop character, careers, and companies.
