“The lemonade stand is a widely used and recognized symbol of capitalism and entrepreneurship. The selling of lemonade on the streets of New York can be traced back to when a New York youngster sold it to thirsty street car riders over 130 years ago. Its connection to youthful entrepreneurship has endured. Today it is often the first entrepreneurial venture of young people and is frequently mentioned as a summertime activity. The operation of a lemonade stand is clearly established as a learning or teaching tool and translates well into games for children, simulations and classroom exercises in most grades. The lemonade stand as a symbol lends itself to story-telling and is the basis of plot development in many children's story-books. It is featured in newspaper and magazine cartoons, media stories every summer, web sites, books and television programs. The lemonade stand as a symbol of capitalism and entrepreneurship is relevant today and endures despite changes in beverage preferences and children's activities.”

Without a doubt, the lemonade stand has earned its rightful place in American history as an enduring and endearing symbol of youthful ingenuity. Thus, it is no coincidence that Lemonade Day embodies the admirable tenets of free enterprise, empowerment through financial literacy, and self-sufficiency.

This month and throughout the hot summer months that are approaching, thousands of young people of all races, religions, and socio-economic levels will be hosting lemonade stands all over the United States and Canada through our Lemonade Day youth entrepreneurship program.  Kids from kindergarten through fifth grade, aided by caring adult mentors, will be setting up lemonade stands in various shades of yellow, pink, green and orange on street corners and country roads, in retail parking lots, at churches and sporting venues. Supportive family members, friends, neighbors, and kind strangers will sample a huge assortment of lemonade concoctions (think raspberry lemonade, flaxseed-honey lemonade, and store-bought mixes). In the process, kids will learn lessons that will serve them for life.

When kids register to participate in Lemonade Day, they are signing up for more than an event – they are signing up to learn about business planning, goal-setting, product development, site selection, marketing and promotion, customer service, financial management and charitable giving.  With guidance from a caring adult mentor, who is equipped with an instructional workbook, kids will create a plan that leads them to hosting a lemonade stand in their hometown They will earn their own money that they can then spend, save and share with a cause that matters to them.

Please help me and other Lemonade Leaders paint North America yellow with lemonade stands in your city. Kids who start their own lemonade business now are more likely to start a business of their own in the future, and that means they will be painting a future that is bright green.

About Lemonade Day

Founded in Houston in 2007 by Michael and Lisa Holthouse, Lemonade Day is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching every child across North America the business and financial skills that are the key ingredients of entrepreneurship.  By learning these skills early in life, children will be better prepared to be successful, financially healthy adults.  Through our fun, hands-on program, kids K-5 are empowered to start their very own business—a lemonade stand—and experience the feeling of earning real money, using 100% of their profit to spend, save and share based on their own goals.

Lemonade Day is hosted in 66 territories in North America and is growing. Over the past 10 years, we have served more than 1 million kids in our kid entrepreneur programs. Within the next five years, Lemonade Day leaders estimate that 250,000 mentors and millions more kids will be hosting lemonade stands in North America and on other continents throughout the world.

Please visit LemonadeDay.org to learn how to participate in Lemonade Day in your city or to donate locally or nationally. Lemonade Day very much appreciates the support of our national sponsor Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, who is joined by our in-kind sponsors Ready Ice and True Citrus.
