Stepping Up and Stepping Out for Lemonade Day in a Big Way This Week!
By Steven Gordon, Lemonade Day National President
We have embarked on an exciting week in the lifespan of Lemonade Day. When I use the reference to “we,” I mean hundreds of supporters of Lemonade Day in Houston; Washington, D.C.; Austin; and Louisville this week, especially. We are stepping up and stepping out in a big way to promote our mission and vision for empowering millions of kids to become entrepreneurs. Kids who engage in the Lemonade Day national youth entrepreneurship program will learn valuable business and leadership lessons by hosting a lemonade stand in their hometown.
On Sunday, Feb. 11, brothers Zayton and Kanden Stewart joined me for a live morning feature segment at KPRC TV studios in Houston—https://www.click2houston.com/video/lemonade-day-project?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar. These boys impressed TV anchor Brandon Walker by revealing that they had raised more than $8,000 through their Oh So Fresh Lemonade business and that they have plans to launch a line of men’s fragrances in the future. And these guys are only 12 and 14!
On Monday, Feb. 12, our senior Lemonade Day national PR consultant, Laura Pennino, started talking up Lemonade Day to her fellow Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses alumni attending the first ever Alumni Summit in Washington, D.C. About 3,000 of them will be present at this summit. On Wednesday, Laura will be visiting several Texas Congressional representatives on Capitol Hill with other GS10KSB alumni to advocate for small business support—including support of youth entrepreneurship.
On Thursday, Feb. 15, Rachael Forker and our two 2017 Lemonade Day National Youth Entrepreneurs of the Year will be featured on the Great Day Washington live morning TV show in Washington, D.C. to explain their positive Lemonade Day experiences and why others should get involved. Rachael is the City Director of Lemonade Day in the D.C. metro area. She leads the Lemonade Day program that is hosted by George Washington University. Hailey Hertzman and Katie Vonder Harr, 12, are sixth graders from Louisville, KY who donated almost $500 from their Lemonade Day profits to a local charity last year.
On Friday morning, Feb. 16, I will be featured on the Bauer Business Segment with host Florian Martin on 88.7 FM, a National Public Radio Affiliate and the radio station that is part of Houston Public Media. You will be able to find the segment on Friday at www.houstonpublicmedia.org.
Also on Friday, Feb. 16, Lemonade Day will co-host a briefing with Gallup on the topic “Business Startup Challenges and Youth Entrepreneurship Opportunities” starting at 8:30 a.m. at Gallup Headquarters in Washington, D.C. If you and/or others you know are in the D.C. area on that day, please join us for insights from Jim Clifton, Gallup’s chairman and chief executive officer, and Joe Daly, Gallup partner and a member of the Lemonade Day Board of Directors. Three successful young entrepreneurs—Hailey, Katie and Rohit Srinivasan—will share their Lemonade Day stories with executives attending the briefing. Rohit, 17, is an alumnus of the Lemonade Day program and a senior at West Lake High School in Austin, TX. Srinivasan got the idea to start his company, Trashbots, after visiting an orphanage in India in 2013. He is the founder of Trashbots and a TEDxYouth presenter. Srinivasan’s passion for robotics led him to develop low cost robotics kits for students in underdeveloped communities. Trashbots has won numerous awards, including the SXSW EDU Student Start-up Competition.

Collectively, we can encourage more young people to graduate from Lemonade Day and start ventures that will create jobs and benefit causes that matter to them. But we need your help! Lemonade Day is seeking sponsors, donors, mentors, volunteers, strategic partners, in-kind product and service providers, host cities, and champions of all ages and in all stages of life who believe in empowerment through entrepreneurship. About Lemonade Day
Founded in Houston in 2007 by Michael and Lisa Holthouse, Lemonade Day is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching every child across North America the business and financial skills that are the key ingredients of entrepreneurship. By learning these skills early in life, children will be better prepared to be successful, financially healthy adults. Through our fun, hands-on program, kids K-5 are empowered to start their very own business—a lemonade stand—and experience the feeling of earning real money, using 100% of their profit to spend, save and share based on their own goals.
Lemonade Day is hosted in 66 territories in North America and growing. Over the past 10 years, we have served more than 1 million kids in our kid entrepreneur programs.
